e-learning platform for medical device training
A library of both generic and detailed training to ensure staff are trained in new or different medical
devices and that information is easily accessible through a secure NHS network. Initially focusing on
device types that are patient-safety critical, in extensive use throughout the NHS, and technically
complex, the platform will eventually cover all major devices.

Patient safety DVD
The film takes patients on a hospital tour, encouraging them to become more involved in their own care
and explaining why this is important.

Medical device training criteria
This generic framework sets out the core requirements for training programmes dealing with the safe and
efficient use of medical devices. Areas covered include competencies required, risk management, storage
and maintenance and information for patients.

Laparoscopic colorectal cancer training guide
A single framework for training curricula for laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The project recognised
there was no standard curriculum and no agreed framework for the training courses provided by hospital
and institutes.

Managing the consequences of adverse incidents
Designed to support the systems in place for managing adverse events, this project includes workshops to
ensure managers and staff provide continuity of care and patient support. It also includes supporting
material for staff and patients such as leaflets and wall charts.

Patient information DVDs
This is a series of informative DVDs giving patients general guidance on what will happen to them before,
during and after a specific procedure. The first four DVDs deal with general anaesthesia, spinal
anaesthesia, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and total knee replacement.

Patient recovery DVDs
These short DVDs for patients cover intitial diagnsosis through to discharge, highlighting how patients
can assist their recovery. The first two deal with bowel resection following cancer and total hip
replacements and total knee replacement.

By enhancing team-working skills among multi-professional surgical staff, the aim is to improve performance
and outcomes in operating theatres. An e-learning team training module will be produced.

A best practice guide on how to navigate the complex selection process and select an electronic
prescribing system for chemotherapy including start-up, governance and procurement.

Extending the use of Entonox
This is a practical guide on how to widen the use of Entonox (gas and air) in acute and primary care trusts.
It includes protocol templates, prescribing guidelines, planning and logistics, and reference to accredited
training and assessment.

This study reviewed the emerging new technologies which will help the NHS to bring training to the trainee.
Innovative approaches are now accessible which will reduce time away from the ward for busy clinical staff.

Monitoring deteriorating patients
With so much pressure now being felt in nursing training curricula, this project will develop innovative
interactive methodologies to develop clinical skills in monitoring seriously ill patients and delivering
timely care when deterioration is observed.

Creation of a guide and manual to take Trusts through the effective project management of the implementation
of new technology (PDAs, tablet PCs, etc.) for the delivery of electronic patient notes.

Training in the virtual world
Creation of an interactive virtual hospital bay (including patient, pump, pulse oximeter and notes) to
assess the potential of Second Life as a medium for the delivery of complex clinical training
environments.
